    The hospital's practice of referring less critically ill patients to neighborhood clinics, instead of treating them in the emergency room became a campaign topic in the presidential election of 2008. Michelle Obama, wife of democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama had reportedly been a driving force behind the initiative while a vice-president at the medical center.   • History

    The University of Chicago was founded in 1892. In 1898 the school became affiliated with Rush Medical College, and plans began for the construction of the medical center. The original cost of the University of Chicago Medical Center was estimated to be $5.3 million when construction of the facility began in 1916. However, due to World War I, construction was delayed. By the time it was completed in 1927, the actual cost was approximately 5 times the original estimate.University of Chicago Medical Center: History
