History
Santa Barbara State College was an established teacher's college that was taken over by the University of California system in 1944 as a result of a decision by the Board of Regents to convert the school to a more research-based facility. A bill was signed by the governor of the time, Earl Warren, for the acquisition to be carried out. Fall semester enrollment during the first year of operation was 1,464; the school employed a faculty of 95.University of California Archives: History
