  • University of California, San Diego is a public research university that is one of ten schools in the University of California higher education system.
  • The Scripps Institution

    UC San Diego has its origins in the early 20th century when zoologists at UC Berkeley wanted to establish a marine station on the Pacific ocean.

    In 1909, land in La Jolla was donated by E. W. Scripps and E. B. Scripps. The facility was called the Scripps Institution of Marine Biology. In 1960, when the Regents decided to name the general campus the University of California, San Diego, they voted that the Scripps school be known as University of California's Scripps Institution of Oceanography, La Jolla.
