• A Young University

  UCI, as it is commonly known, was established in 1965. The university takes its name from the Irvine Company, a real estate development firm that donated 1,000 acres to the university for $1.00 and sold another 500 acres. The city of Irvine was planned around the university in 1971. The University of California at Irvine is the second youngest institution in the UC system.
