Universal Music Group was formed in 1934 as the American branch of Decca Records, a label from Britain. UMG was at one time tied to Universal studious, and was the first music label to be tied to a film production company. As of 2004, UMG and Universal Studios are no longer affiliated. In 2006, UMG was purchased by Vivendi Studios. As of 2008, UMG is the largest music group in the United States.
