The United States Naval Academy has been training military officers of the U.S. Navy and U.S. Marine Corps for over 160 years. Since the start of the academy over 60,000 young adults have successfully completed the nicknamed "four years by the Bay" and have earned places in America's Naval service. The Academy also host many different sports teams and the USNA athletic teams currently play in the Patriot League.
History
In 1845 the Secretary of the Navy, George Bancroft, founded the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis, MD. As the U.S. Navy has moved from a small fleet of sail boats to a new age infantry of nuclear-powered submarines and surface ships as well as high powerd aircrafts. In addition to its armed forces it also provides an academy that gives young adults up-to-date academic and professional training. Most of the skills taught at the academy are necessary to be an effective naval or marine officer.
The academy puts great stress on attention to individual students by highly qualified faculty members. Classes are usually small, and have an average size of fewer than 18 students. The 600-member faculty is a made up almost equally of civilians and officers. While working together, these faculty members form one of the most dedicated teaching faculties of any college or university in the country and the United States Naval Academy claims its mission is to "develop midshipmen morally, mentally, and physically.”
