  • Life and Career

Uma Thurman's mother was a fashion model and her father was the first American to be ordained as a Tibetan Buddhist. She grew up feeling extremely uncomfortable about her body and was often made fun of in school.

After some minor successes, she started working on bigger projects such as Mad Dog and Glory, in which she starred opposite Robert De Niro, and Gus Van Sant's Even Cowgirls Ge the Blues. Neither of these films were particularly well received.

Thurman's big break out success came when she partnered up in 1994 with director Quentin Tarantino for the film Pulp Fiction. Her character portrayal had audiences and critics taking notice of her ability. She again teamed up with Tarantino in 2003 to play the lead in his Kill Bill two part film series, which established her as a top leading woman in Hollywood.
