Uluru is a large sandstone formation in the Australian Northern Territory. Also known as Ayers Rock, Uluru is located with the Uluru - Kata Tjuta National Park several miles away from the nearest town, Alice Springs. Uluru is particularly notable for its apparent color changes that accompany the changing of the seasons. At certain times of the year, Uluru appears to glow bright red during the sunset hours.

A Supernatural Rock
Uluru is a sacred place for local aboriginal people. The are several creation stories involving Uluru; one states that it was created by two boys playing in the mud, while another says that warring snake-creatures and their conflicts formed the landmark and its many fissures. There is also a local legend that warns against taking a piece of the rock away from the immediate area. It is said that any person taking rocks away will be cursed and suffer from bad luck. Though the legend may seem like typical superstition to some, a few rock pilferers have gone so far as to mail stolen rocks back in an attempt to avert the curse of Uluru. -
