UFC 97 Rules Controversy
Though UFC matches have traditionally been governed by the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, reports surfaced in February 2009 that province regulators had requested a new set of rules be used. The new rules would have changed previously banned knee and elbow strikes, provided smaller cages for matches and would have stopped fights if a fighter was knocked down. This led many fans to worry that changes in the rules would change the nature of UFC matches. Less than a week after the initial announcement, UFC officials announced on February 18, 2009, that province regulators had agreed to allow the UFC to abide by the Unified Rules. As a concession to the concerned province regulators, UFC officials have banned the use of foot stomps in this particular event.Official Site: UFC 97 Redemption
