When it was first conceived, The UEFA Cup featured the winners of all European national Cup winners, and was organized as a knock-out competition.Later, more teams were added, from those who ended behind the UEFA Champions League participants in the national competitions. In recent years, a group-stage was introduced, and the number of participants was increased.
