Initial rumors had suggested that the band was working on tracks for the new album with legendary producer Rick Rubin. Although the band confirmed those rumors, they also stated that those tracks had been set aside for the moment and that they had decided to instead start work on a set of different songs with longtime collaborators Brian Eno, Daniel Lanois and Steve Lillywhite. According to guitarist The Edge, "We actually laid all that stuff to one side. Really out of deference to Rick and that set of songs we just said, OK, that’s that, and we drew a line. So none of the Rick material went into this project. Everything has been written subsequently."NME: U2 scrap Rick Rubin tracks on new album (November 26, 2008)
