U.S. Relations with Syria

  • For the last two decades, Syrian-U.S. relations have been defined by a contraposition of the religious, social, political and geopolitical interests of both nations. The United States opposes Syrian involvement in Lebanon, its alleged support of terrorism, and its ambitions to develop weapons of mass destruction. Syria criticizes American policy in the Middle East and accuses the U.S. of favoring Israel in local conflicts. Analysts say that the U.S. military's helicopter attack in Syrian territory in late October 2008 may have aggravated the unstable relationship between the two countries.WSJ: Syria Halts Diplomacy After U.S. Military Strike (October 28, 2008) AT: The strike that shattered US-Syria ties (October 29, 2008)
