U.S. Relations with China

United States-China relations were icy from the advent of the communist People's Republic of China in 1949 until the early 1970s. They have improved significantly since President Richard Nixon visited the country in 1972. Ongoing obstacles to positive relations have included disagreements over the independence of Taiwan and Tibet, economic tensions and alleged human rights violations on the part of China.
