  • The United States sends a team of hockey players to compete in the Winter Olympics every four years. The team generally consists of top American players from the National Hockey League. Through 2006, the team has won 10 medals, most notably the gold medal in the 1980 Miracle On Ice.

    In the 2010 Olympics, the roster for the U.S. Olympic hockey team will be announced on January 1 at the NHL Winter Classic. Ron Wilson will serve as the head coach with Scott Gordon and John Tortorella as his assistants.

    While the 1960 U.S. Olympic hockey team won the gold medal, the most notable moment in U.S. Olympic hockey history is the 1980 Miracle On Ice. Coming is as a long shot with the Soviet Union heavily favored, head coach Herb Brooks led the team of young college players to defeat the Soviets in the round-robin, then went on to defeat Finland for the gold medal. The win is considered one of the top moments in the history of American sports.
