U.S. Government

U.S Government is made up of three branches, Executive | Legislative | Judicial. Each branch of the U.S. Government oversees the other branch as a way to provide checks and balances for the security of the United States citizens.

Background

July 4, 1776 saw the ratification of the Declaration of Independence making the United States free from British rule. September 17, 1787 members of the Constitutional Convention signed the United States Constitution on in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Four months of secret debate and compromises, the proposed Constitution was sent to the states for approval. The Constitution was eventually ratified and the new Federal government came into existence in 1789. The Constitution established the U.S. government as it exists today.

With the establishment of the U.S. Constitution came the election of the first President George Washington and the creation of the Legislative and Judicial. The Constitution also created body of laws and regulations by which the citizens of the newly formed states would live life freely and governed by an elected body of congressmen.

State Government

Each state is governed by a body of elected officials that comprise of state Senators, State Representatives, ]]Attorney General]] and Governor. State government mirrors the federal government in that it has a Executive Branch, Legislative Branch and a Judicial Branch that proved at a state level a system of checks and balances.

The state government for each state over sees the financial and legal matters faced with each state, while insuring that they meet or exceed rules and laws passed at the Federal level.

Secret Service

The Secret Service has evolved into a much larger policing body of protection then when it was first created in July 5, 1865. Its main focus was to suppress counterfeit currency. Chief William P. Wood was sworn in by Secretary of the Treasury Hugh McCulloch.

By 1902 the Secret Service had been expanded to full time protection of the President of the United States. By this time there had been at least three Presidential assassinations on the President: Abraham Lincoln, James Garfield and William McKinley. Over the last 107 years nine other Presidents have had assassinations attempts on their life.

In 2002 newly formed Department of Homeland Security a direct result of the 9/11 attacks of the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and the Hijacking of Flight 93. The Secret Service was moved under the care and oversight of Homeland Security
