The U.S. Department of Labor (DoL) is a Cabinet-level division of the Federal Government. Early History
The Department of Labor originated from the Bureau of Labor, established in 1884 under President Chester A. Arthur. On February 14, 1903, Theodore Roosevelt expanded the Bureau of Labor's duties and renamed the Department of Commerce and Labor. The Department of Labor became its own independent Cabinet agency on March 4, 1913. President William H. Taft signed the legislation to do so on his very last day in office. -
