Twitter Lists for Journalists

  • If you are a journalist or public relations person, or even a blogger or social media analyst, it is important to keep up with what is being talked about in the online community, not only to get viable news information and topics, but to know what today's trends are and what people want to hear about. There is no greater social networking tool to help you discover the things that people are talking about than Twitter and Twitter Trends. And with the November 2 release of the new Twitter Lists feature, knowing who to track has never been easier.
  • Background

The largest ongoing list of journalists who use Twitter is the Twittering Journalists Wiki project created by Harry Hoover on My Creative Team. http://twitteringjournalists.pbworks.com/Media+People+Using+Twitter+-+North+America This page lists hundreds of journalists on Twitter in the US and nearly 30 in Canada, and includes direct links to their Twitter screen names.

In addition, the New York Times has compiled an impressive list of Twitter users on a variety of subjects. In addition to following the New York Times staff members on Twitter, it is also a great idea to follow various experts on subjects in different fields.

The site Listorious provides Twitter users a great way to find Twitter Lists on any subject, including those lists created by the New York Times. Jay Rosen, a journalism professor at NYU has also compiled a terrific list, not necessarily of journalists, but of what he calls the greatest mindcasters of Twitter. http://twitter.com/jayrosen_nyu/best-mindcasters-i-know

In the UK, Stephen Davies has compiled an excellent list of journalists on Twitter. http://twitter.com/stedavies/uk-journalists A great way to find other people who are twittering about the things that may be of interest to you is to add journalists, then look at their Twitter Lists to see who they are following as well.
