• Twitter is a micro-blogging service that allows users to post short messages called tweets to a stream that can be viewed by the user's friends and contacts. Users can also see the tweets of their friends. Tweets can be posted via the web site, text messages from a cell phone or any of the various third-party applications designed to work with Twitter.

    1. On Tuesday, November 17, Twitter upgraded network equipment between 11p and 1a Pacific. The site was unavailable for short periods in that window.

    Twitter has yet to clarify weather this affected it's API or not.

  • DNS Poison Twitter Hacking

    On Friday December 18 2009 From 9:46pm to 11PM PST a entity referring to themselves as "The Iranian Cyber Army" took responsibility for a DNS atack of the main twitter.com domain.

    Officials from twitter concluded at some point twitters DNS credentials where compromised and are in the process of being restored. http://twitter.com/twitter/status/6789717364

    The main Twitter API service was not affected.


    Twitter released the following statement on their company blog.

    "During the attack, we were in direct contact with our DNS provider, Dynect. We worked closely to reset our DNS as quickly as possible. The motive for this attack appears to have been focused on defacing our site, not aimed at users—we don't believe any accounts were compromised. If you're concerned that your account could have been affected in some way, feel free to contact us, accountsafe [at] twitter.com."

  • Iran Election

  • Twitter Lists

    Twitter has been rolling out a feature they call Twitter Lists which allows users to group together users into specific categories which other users can follow or view on demand.
  • Twitter TV Show

    In late-May of 2009, Twitter announced that it was working with Reveille and Brillstein Entertainment to develop a Twitter reality TV show. The unscripted series is said to put "ordinary people on the trail of celebrities in a revolutionary competitive format."
  • Awards and Acquisitions

    Twitter was named Webby Breakout of the Year on May 5, 2009. Also on May 5, rumors began to surface that Apple was involved in late-stage negotiations to buy Twitter for $700 million.   • Twitter Arrest

  • Oprah Effect

    Market tracker Hitwise conducted a before and after survey to measure the "Oprah Effect" on Twitter. According to Hitwise, Twitter experienced a 43 percent increase in traffic after Oprah announced her presence on the micro-blogging site.   • Kutcher vs. CNN

    On April 17, 2009, actor Ashton Kutcher became the first Twitter user to have one million followers.   • Twitter Worms

    Over the weekend of April 11, 2009, Twitter was the target of two separate worm attacks. The first one was attributed to the website StalkDaily, despite the site's insistence that it was not involved. On Sunday, April 12, a new worm appeared, taking the same format as the StalkDaily worm, but flaunting the name of 'mikeyy' instead. The worm works by stealing user's twitter information when they visit an infected profile.   • Twitter Funding

    On February 13, 2009, Twitter announced on their blog that they had closed deals to receive funding from Benchmark Capital and Institutional Venture Partners.   • Twitter Surpasses Digg

    On January 20, 2009, the blog TechCrunch reported that Twitter had surpassed the popular news aggregation service Digg in visits. The news came on the day of Barack Obama's presidential inauguration, which was expected to cause five times the number of "tweets" per second as a typical day.     Twitter launched the application Twitter Suggestions in January 2009. It gives Twitter users suggestions on who they might want to follow on the Web site.   • Phish Attack

    Many Twitter users' sensitive account information was put at risk on January 3, 2008, with the spread of a phishing attack campaign that was transferred through the company's "direct messaging" service. The malicious direct message read, "hey! check out this funny blog about you..." followed by a link to a blogspot site. The blogspot link redirected to a clone of Twitter's main site, leading users to believe they needed to log-in to the service. The cloned site was actually a phishing method of retrieving users' passwords through a fake sign-in form.   • Third-Party Applications

    Many third-party developers have created applications that work with Twitter, each with its own unique features. Twhirl is a popular client with many useful features, but it requires the Adobe AIR runtime to work. Twitterific is another popular Twitter application, and though it is not as powerful or versatile as Twhirl, it is much easier to install.
  • Twitter's Competition

    Twitter's success has been a key to the proliferation of other sites that have similar services. Among these were Jaiku, Pownce, and Dopplr. Jaiku and Pownce, which functioned in much the same was as Twitter and were backed by Google and Digg founder Kevin Rose, respectively, both ceased development in late 2008 and early 2009. Jaiku will live on as an open-source project running on Google App Engine. Dopplr is notable for focusing on travel and featuring other travel-related functions with their service.
  • Undelivered Tweets

    On Thursday December 9, 2009 Twitter acknowledged a small issue with a handful of users getting tweets from followers they are not following.   • Zenbe Integration
