Twinkies are a popular sponge cake with a cream filling distributed by Hostess. Twinkies can be eaten alone as a snack and they are also used in some recipes.
Twinkies were developed by Jimmy Dewar during the great depression as an inexpensive treat. They were filled with banana filling but due the the banana shortage during WWII the filling was changed to vanilla.
