The tulip is a flowering and bulbous perennial plant that blooms in spring. The tulip is commonly believed to be from Holland, but it is truly a native of Turkey, Iran and Afghanistan.
During the first half of the 17th Century, the obsession with tulips in the Netherlands created such a high demand, that the prices were astronomical for a single bulb. The event is referred to as Tulip mania. The Royal Horticultural Association of Holland has 16 official divisions for grouping tulips, based on shape, blooming time, and other characteristics.
