Birth and Tradition of Tufts University
Around the mid 1800s, Charles Tufts, a businessman in Boston, donated 20 acres of land, worth $20,000, to the Universalist Church, which had sought to establish a college in New England. Legend has it that when asked what he would do with the hilly land, Tufts responded, "I will put a light on it."http://www.tufts.edu/home/get_to_know_tufts/history/ Although founded on Universalist principles, Tufts University gradually became secular after it embraced coeducation at the turn of the 19th century.http://www.tufts.edu/alumni/magazine/spring2002/univ.html
