Tripoli History
Phoenicians called ancient Tripoli Oea when they founded it in seventh century B.C.E. Combined with the cities of Sabratha and Leptis Magna, Tripoli formed the Tripolitania or African Tripolis.
In the 20th century, Italy gained control of the area. After the World War II, England took over the administration of the country.
