    Trifles can be made with alcohol or fruit juice. Liquid of some sort is needed to make the cake moist. Sherry wine is a popular additive to trifles, which are sometimes called Sherry trifles. Other trifles are soaked in jelly. When the jelly and cake combine, they form a gelatin which is considered favorable.

    A chocolate trifle is a popular item. However, these desserts are incorrectly named since a trifle must contain fruit and not be made solely out of chocolate. In addition to being a sweet dessert, trifles are made as decorative pieces. They are also a popular item around Christmas time.
