Treaty of Versailles

    • Signed: June 28, 1919
    • Drastically reduced the size of the German army and navy
    • German air force was disbanded
    • League of Nations was established
    • Germany forfeited territory and paid reparations to some countries
    • German allies had to accept full responsibility for war
    • Negotiated at the Paris Peace Conference
    • Never ratified by the United States
  • The Treaty of Versailles was the peace treaty between the Allies and Germany that ended World War I. The terms were harsh on Germany and its allies, and it failed to prevent the outbreak of World War II in the late 1930s.
  • The Fourteen Points

United States President Woodrow Wilson had drafted his Fourteen Points, which he presented at the Paris Peace Conference. However, only three of these were included in the Treaty of Versailles, and the U.S. refused to ratify it. One of the points that made it through was the establishment of the League of Nations, which the U.S. did not join.
