Travis Metcalf is a third baseman for the Texas Rangers. Coming out of high school, the Minnesota Twins selected Metcalf in the 38th round of the 2003 amateur draft. He declined a contract however, and chose to play college baseball at Kansas University. After a year in Kansas, the Rangers selected Metcalf in the 11th round of the 2004 draft. After a few years as a minor leaguer in the Rangers farm system, Metcalf made his major league debut on May 19, 2007. Metcalfs first big league hit was a home run off of the Pittsburgh Pirates pitcher Tom Gorzelanny.
Strengths
Metcalf is fundamentally sound as a defensive third baseman, and possesses a strong throwing arm.[1]
Weaknesses
Metcalf's approach at the plate makes him a frequent strikeout victim.[1]
