Traverse City, MI

Traverse City, MI is located in on Northern West side of the state of Michigan on Grand Traverse Bay which includes 250 miles of Lake Michigan’s shoreline. The first people to live in the area were the Ottawa, Chippewa, and Potawatomi Indians. The Indians lived in and enjoyed the area until settlers arrived in the 1840’s and seen what the city had to offer for the lumbering industry. From the time of its foundation in 1846 the lumbering industry grew quickly. Perry Hannah was one of the settlers that seen the potential in the city and its location. He founded one of the first logging companies in Traverse City. However the prosperous business of logging didn’t last long due to the fact the supply of trees had been exhausted by 1915. At which time agriculture became the way to succeed.

A pioneer by the name Peter Dougherty disregarded others and planted the first Cherry Orchard in 1852. Soon others along with Dougherty found that the area had all that was needed to grow cherry trees and by 1900 cherries were being shipped across the United States.
