Pet owners may choose to bring a pet with them when traveling. In order to ensure the safety, health and wellbeing of both you and your pet, proper planning is required. A responsible pet owner must also make sure that pet regulations of the destination and any stops along the way are met.
Whether you are planning a trip by car, by air, by train, or other means of transporation, it is important that you pre-plan. Each mode of transportation will require slightly different needs for your pet or pets.
There are some items that you should carry with you whenever you travel with your pet: pet first aid kit, dishes, bedding, water, food. and all the pet documentation (e.g. vaccines, proof of ownership). Your pet should always be wearing his/her name tags with contact information in case of an emergency. An extra leash and collar is recommended.
If you are traveling by car, you should have the proper car restraints; a restraining harness, a crate or carrier that is restrained. Cats should always be in a carrier that is restrained. Pets should always travel in the back or backseat, never in the front. Frequent stops are required for dogs so that they may relieve themselves and stretch their legs. Never let your dog ride with his;her head out the window and never leave your pet unattended in a vehicle for any length of time, and never when it is hot outside. http://www.hsus.org/pets/pet_care/caring_for_pets_when_you_travel/traveling_by_car.html
Travel by air. Some airlines allow small animals to ride in the aircraft with you, under the seat in front of you, providing that they are in a carrier. The crate must meet specific dimensions and must be soft-sided. Certain exclusions apply. The crate should be clearly marked with your pets name and contact information. Before you travel by air with your pet, you should consult with your veterinarian to make sure that your pet is healthy enough to travel and to discuss any issues or concerns you may have about traveling with your pet.http://www.airlines.org/customerservice/passengers/Air+Travel+for+Your+Pet.htm
In North America, pets are not permitted to travel by train unless they are a service dog. In Europe, there are many countries that do allow and many that do not allow pets to travel by train. Please check with the company prior to making travel plans. http://www.mahalo.com/traveling-with-pets
