  • Transcendental Meditation (TM), is a powerful, and easy to learn form of meditation introduced to the world by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi. He began teaching transcendental meditation in 1955 and brought the technique to the United States in 1959. But the movement really took off after the Beatles visited his ashram in India in 1968, it is said that he had a famous falling out with the rock stars when he discovered them using drugs at his Himalayan retreat.
  • TM and the Beatles

There is no doubt that The Beatles were instrumental in making TM popular but it is the scienctific research behind TM and the dedication of the Maharishi that has made TM the success it is.

In March 2009, the surviving Beatles members, Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr, announced that they would reunite on stage on April 4, 2009 at New York’s Radio City Music Hall in order to raise money to teach transcendental meditation to children internationally.CNN.com: Surviving Beatles reunite to promote kid’s meditation

  • Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and Guru Dev

Transcendental Meditation (TM) can not be covered without some information on the Maharishi and his teacher Guru Dev. There exists another page on Maharishi Mahesh Yogi and I leave it to that page for the more detailed information.

The Maharishi, as we called him, always gave all onus and praise to his Guru, Guru Dev, Swami Brahmananda Saraswati, Shankaracharya of Jyotirmath. http://www.paulmason.info/gurudev/introduction.htm

  • Science and Research

Since Maharishi Mahesh Yogi first introduced the TM technique, a vast amount of scientific and medical research has been conducted on this technique. Some have tried to disprove or throw suspicion on the scientific evidence but have failed to undermine the credibility and the volume of corroborating evidence that the TM technique does work and it does provide amazing benefits to its practitioners.

TM is not without its controversy, and some of the claims made have been a stretch based on the actual scientific results, but in science assumptions and theories arise all the time. Taking away from the assumptions and purely looking at the research one can see that something good happens when one meditates using the TM technique.

Reference Information on the science behind TM and the research conducted can be found at: http://www.mum.edu/tm_research/welcome.html and http://www.truthabouttm.org/truth/TMResearch/index.cfm

  • Western Medicine and Meditation

For the past 40 years, meditation has been slowly joining the ranks of western medicine techniques to help the mind and the body. As can be seen by the Scientific research conducted on TM, and the acceptance by many medical Doctors, TM is a meditation at the forefront of acceptance.

The reason is simple, says Stephen Bodian, author of "Meditation for Dummies," a bestseller in its second edition. Meditation helps people who feel bad to feel good, and people who feel good to feel better.

Meditation, which is turning your attention inward towards your mind, has been reportedly used by more then 15.3 million people according to the National Centers for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) to help ease symptoms of illness.
