  • TCM for Health Maintenance and Complementary Medicine

Ancient in its Taoist beginnings, more than 2000 years ago, contemporary Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practice includes acupuncture, medicinal herbs, external qi healing, and qigong, In Western Medicine, TCM is viewed as an alternative medicine, one which complements the use of modern medicinal approaches. According to Jon Kabat-Zinn, "We don't have a health care system; we have a disease care system." http://www.kwanumzen.org/primarypoint/v08n2-1991-summer-jonkabatzinn-mindfulmedicine.html As an aid in increasing wellness, TCM practices complement Western medicine by making health giving practice available. TCM practices are being used for healing today in various hospitals and clinics in the United States, as well as in other countries outside of Asia. In 2007, a survey revealed that about 3.1 million residents of the United States used acupuncture therapy. http://nccam.nih.gov/health/whatiscam/chinesemed.htm
  • Traditional Chinese Medicine Diagnostic and Treatment Methods

TCM understands the human body in a holistic manner, based on the five elements theory which corresponds with the five organs (heart, liver, kidneys, spleen and lungs) and eight principle theory: cold/heat, interior/exterior, excess/deficiency and yin/yang. Illness is seen as being caused by excesses or deficiencies of energy (qi or chi) within the five organ systems. Unlike Western Medicine, treatments are not based solely on the symptoms, but on a differentiation of syndromes that are evaluated by pulse readings, tongue characteristics and other factors. TCM practitioners analyze the entire system and then focus on correcting maladies by adjustment of the function of the affected organs in the body. People who have the same disorder may have different treatment regimens. http://www.tcmpage.com/ http://nccam.nih.gov/health/whatiscam/chinesemed.htm
