  • History

Originally, the company, which was later to become known as the Toyota Motor Company, was a division of Toyoda Industries. The division created its first product, the Type A engine, in 1934, and its first car in 1936. Toyota Motor Company became a separate company in 1937 and was headed by Sakichi Toyoda's son, Kiichiro. The name, Toyoda, which means fertile rice paddies in Japanese, was eventually changed to Toyota, not only to distance itself from an association with old-fashioned farming but to also change the "d" to a more resonant voiceless consonant.

In 1982, Toyota Motor Company merged with its sales division, Toyota Motor Sales, to become Toyota Motor Corporation. Besides its well-known line of fuel-efficient compact cars, Toyota is marketed under its Lexus and Scion brands.[1]
