Tortilla Chips are baked or fried corn tortillas. They are commonly found in Mexican and Tex-Mex Cuisine.
In the 1940s, tortilla chips were made as a way to use malformed tortillas that came out of an automated tortilla machine. They were cut into triangles, fried, and sold for a dime a bag by the El Zarape Tortilla Factory.
They are commonly served in Mexican restaurants with salsa or guacamole, but are a popular dish when served as nachos.
The most common commercial makers of tortilla chips in the United States are Tostitos and Doritos.
