The Toronto Maple Leafs is a professional hockey team that plays in the Northeast division of the Eastern Conference in the National Hockey League.

Early Success
Toronto joined the NHL as one of the founding four teams in 1917. They were immediately successful, finishing the season in a tie for first place with the Montreal Canadiens. They went on to defeat the Vancouver Millionaires to win the first Stanley Cup Championship in the history of the league. After a name change to the Toronto St. Patricks, they returned to win the Championship in 1922. On February 14, 1927, the team was sold to Conn Smythe, who changed the name to the Toronto Maple Leafs. -
