Early Success
Toronto joined the NHL as one of the founding four teams in 1917. They were immediately successful, finishing the season in a tie for first place with the Montreal Canadiens. They went on to defeat the Vancouver Millionaires to win the first Stanley Cup Championship in the history of the league. After a name change to the Toronto St. Patricks, they returned to win the Championship in 1922. On February 14, 1927, the team was sold to Conn Smythe, who changed the name to the Toronto Maple Leafs.Dynasty Decades
The Leafs dominated the league in the 1940s, winning the Stanley Cup in five of seven seasons starting in 1945. They repeated this domination in the 1960s, winning four additional championships over six seasons.Recent Years
The Leafs have been less successful in recent years, failing to qualify for the post season in the four years after the 2004-2005 NHL lockout.Goalies
