The 2007 Toronto International Film Festival took place in September, featuring both Hollywood and indie films in its program.
Some of the favorites among critics had already premiered at Cannes, including The Diving Bell and the Butterfly, No Country for Old Men, and 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days.
Eastern Promises and Juno, meanwhile, were audience favorites. Upon hearing the response to Juno, which made its premiere at the TIFF, Roger Ebert wrote, "I don’t know when I’ve heard a standing ovation so long, loud and warm." Though the film did not win anything, it was the runner-up for the "People Choice Award," which went to Eastern Promises.
Other mainstream showcases at the TIFF included Michael Clayton, Across the Universe, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and Before the Devil Knows You're Dead.
