Playing a Mage in World of Warcraft
Mages are limited to wearing only cloth armor, so many mages choose the Tailoring profession so that they can create their own armor and make spellthread, an armor modification that increases the spellpower for casting classes. Manufacturing spellthread can benefit the mage himself, or he can choose to sell spellthread in the auction house to other casting characters and make some gold. Other professions that can be beneficial to the mage are herbalism, alchemy, inscription, and jewelcrafting.
Mages can choose to wield a staff, or a one handed weapon with an off-hand item geared for casting classes. Mages can wield a wand as their ranged weapon. Mages generally choose gear with stats that boost the mage's spell power, but other stats such as intellect, hit, critical strike, and haste can be useful. Mages that are interested in PvP play will want to find gear with resilience and spell penetration.
