Tobacco Lawsuits

The first tobacco lawsuits were filed in the 1950s, but almost always failed. The tobacco companies argued that the harmful effects of smoking had been recognized for decades; people choose to smoke and so are personally responsible if they suffer ill effects.Slate: A Tobacco Lawsuit Primer (April 25, 2000)

In the late 1990s, plaintiffs began introducing scientific documentation of the chemical dependency generated by smoking—and proof that the tobacco companies were well aware of its addictive properties.Slate: A Tobacco Lawsuit Primer (April 25, 2000) The first successful tobacco lawsuit was awarded in February 2000, when a California jury ordered Philip Morris to pay $51.5 million to a California smoker with inoperable lung cancer.Slate: A Tobacco Lawsuit Primer (April 25, 2000)

NAACP

The goal of the NAACP is to rid the world of racial prejudice and to assist all American minority groups to receive fair treatment and rights. To that end, the early organization was primarily concerned with making sure that all people received the rights guaranteed to them by the 13th, 14th and 15th Amendments to the U.S. Constitution, which included:

  1. The right to vote
  2. The end of slavery
  3. Equal protection based on the country's lawshttp://www.naacp.org/pages/naacp-history

In recent times, the organization has faced the issue of recruiting new members. Some feel that the civil rights movement is no longer necessary, especially with the election of Barack Obama as President. In response, President and CEO Benjamin Jealous stressed that the NAACP still has racial hurdles to overcome, such as "bridging the wealth gap between whites and minorities, improving public schools...and providing better access to health care".http://www.stltoday.com/news/national/article_950246e1-765e-5737-906e-460c2f29a99c.html

How to Report Medicare Fraud

Medicare fraud is a serious situation; however there are numerous steps you can take to help prevent it from occurring or reoccurring. The first steps you should take are always reviewing your Medicare Summary Notice for errors and reporting anything you feel may be wrong or suspicious. You should also be cautious if you are ever offered free testing or services in exchange for your Medicare number or if you have a provider who states they are endorsed by Medicare or the Federal government. Never give out your Medicare Health Insurance Claim Number that is listed on your Medicare except to your provider when absolutely necessary. Do not allow anyone, except for authorized medical professionals review your medical or billing records or recommend services to you. Do not accept free services and do not ask your provider for services that you truly do not need. Also, as mentioned above, try to avoid any physicians who state they know how to get Medicare to cover a service or procedure that isn’t usually covered.http://www.medicare.gov/FraudAbuse/Tips.asp

Taking these preventative measures will help cut back on any fraudulent Medicare activity that is done by providers. By helping to stop any fraud, you will also be preventing future increases in healthcare costs due to the abuse of the Medicare system.
