Olympic Ladies Slalom
Although American women (Grethen Fraser and Andrea Mead-Lawrence) won the first two slalom gold medals, the event has been dominated by Europeans. Since 1952, non Europeans have only won two of the 14 slalom golds, and Europeans have won every one since 1976. The slalom has also been marked by the lack of one or two dominant nations; more than a dozen nations have medaled in the ladies slalom, and no country has won more than three gold medals. The only woman ever to win more than a single gold medal was Vreni Schneider, who has two to her credit, from the [[Lillehammer Olympics in 1994 and Calgary Olympics in 1988. Schneider, who was named the Swiss Sportswoman of the Century, also won six World Cup titles in the slalom, as well as another World Championship in the event.

Olympic Cross-Country Pursuit
While a relatively young sport, the 30 km Pursuit has given skiers a chance to show their versatility. The pursuit event combines the classic technique followed by a free technique. At the halfway point of the race, athletes enter the arena or stadium and change skis and poles.
Sweden has been one of the dominant nations when it comes to this event. However, no Norway skiers will participate in this event at the Olympics this year.
Anders Soedergren of Sweden has finished in the top five in four out his five 30 km Pursuit races. Alexander Legkov is a favorite to win a medal in the 2010 Olympics. The Russian finished fourth at the 2009 World Championships.

Olympic Biathlon Men's Relay
The biathlon debuted as an Olympic event in the 1960 games at Squaw Valley, and, in 1924, a men’s military patrol appeared at the games in Chamonix, France as a demonstration sport. In fact, the origins of the sport date back to mid-sixteenth century Scandinavia as a way to provide food for the table and defense for a nation.
The first organized competition involving skiing and shooting was held in Norway in 1767. The stars of the sport are East German Frank-Peter Rotsch, winning Olympic gold and World Cup championships in the 1980s and current star Ole-Einar Bjorndalen from Norway who set a men’s record by winning four gold medals in the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics.

Lindsey Vonn Sports Illustrated
Last week Lindsey Vonn, America’s star female skier, graced the cover of Sports Illustrated adorned in full ski gear. This week she is shown posing in a bikini for the 2010 edition of the same magazines popular Swimsuit Edition. Vonn is shown on the balcony of a hotel overlooking a glacier in Canada wearing a red and white bikini and a white snow cap. The blonde from Minnesota may be the best American skier at the time but she also might be the sexiest as well.http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/more_sports/2010/02/09/2010-02-09_vonn_si_swimsuit_issue_olympians.html

Charlotte Kalla
Kalla entered the Olympics on a roll, and with not just high expectations from herself. The country of Sweden hadn't seen a gold medal in cross country skiing since Toini Gustafsson won the 5 km classical and 10 km classical at the 1968 Winter Olympics held in Grenoble, France.http://www.databaseolympics.com/games/gamesyear.htm?g=36
With the 2010 Winter Olympics Kalla's first foray into international competition on this grand a stage, one may have expected her to falter. This was simply not the case.
Kalla broke the forty two year drought for her home country with a decisive, 6.6 second victory in the 10 kilometer free race held on February 15, 2010.http://www.vancouver2010.com/olympic-cross-country-skiing/schedule-and-results/ladies-10-km-free_ccw010101rY.html It was Sweden's first medal of the Vancouver Games.http://home.kyodo.co.jp/modules/fstPhotos/index.php?photoid=43978
