Asian Longhorned Beetle

Female Asian longhorned beetles can lay 35 to 90 eggs at a time, the eggs hatching in 10 to 15 days. The white grubs that emerge from the eggs develop into caterpillars that then burrow into the cambium layer of the tree and feed for several weeks before continuing deeper into the tree's xylem layer. The caterpillars continue to feed during the winter and pupate the following spring. Adult beetles emerge in the summer to mate, and perish the following fall. http://www.uvm.edu/albeetle/walb.pdf Although they can fly, the beetles rarely travel great distances. They prefer to mate and lay eggs on the tree they developed in and emerged from, although they have been known to travel short distances to other host trees. http://www.massnrc.org/pests/albdocs/ALBPestAlertUSDA.pdf

Since the Asian Longhorned Beetle spends most of its life deep inside the tree, traditional pesticideapplications are ineffective at controlling the pest. Current control methods call for the cutting down and chipping of host trees. Areas that are known to be infested are quarantined, and wood, including firewood, nursery stock, wood debris and lumber are not allowed to be moved out of them. http://beetlebusters.info/FAQs.php

H1N1 Swine Flu Pets

A pet cat in Iowa was confirmed to have the H1N1 virus (swine flu) in early November 2009. According to the CDC, this was the first confirmed and documented case of the swine flu in a cat or dog. Two ferrets also tested positive for the swine flu, one in Oregon and one in Nebraska. Both ferrets died.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33622253/ns/health-pet_health/

The family that owned the cat had flu-like symptoms before the cat contracted the swine flu. The cat suffered a loss of appetite, was lethargic and had trouble breathing. After being treated, the cat reportedly recovered.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33622253/ns/health-pet_health/

How to Care for a Pet Rat

Rats are social animals, so they do best in groups of two or more. As two males may fight, it is best to keep two females or a male and female over two males. To avoid breeding, two females is the best choice. They also need attention from their handlers, so always be sure to play with your rat. Once they learn to trust you, they will be quite friendly and social, and can interact much the same way as a dog or a cat.http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/982532/pet_rat_socialization.html?cat=53

You should always keep your rats cage and litter clean to avoid sicknesses. Litter should be changed when it becomes dirty, litter boxes changed or clean daily, and a wipe down done of the cage and any accessories on a weekly basis. It is best to avoid commercial cleaners and use just hot water and a mild soap.http://www.ratsrule.com/ratcare.html If your rats cage is smelly, it means it is overdue for a cleaning.

Watch for signs of sickness or diseases. Some common signs of a sick rat are sneezing, trouble breathing, general lethargy or listlessness, dull eyes or discharge from the eyes or nose.http://www.aspca.org/pet-care/small-pet-care/rat-care.html In general, if your rat begins acting strangely or different from usual behavior, you need to have it checked out by a veterinarian.

When letting your rat out of its cage, you need to closely supervise it and ...
