How To Argue Persuasively

There is another class of arguments, called "inductive" arguments. Inductive arguments, in the words of logician P.D. Magnus, "generalize from many cases to a conclusion about all cases." http://www.fecundity.com/codex/forallx.pdf

Magnus, on p. 9 of his book forallX, gives the following example of an inductive argument:

"In January 1997, it rained in San Diego. In January 1998, it rained in San Diego. In January 1999, it rained in San Diego. Therefore, it rains every January in San Diego." http://www.fecundity.com/codex/forallx.pdf

Now, inductive arguments cannot be valid or invalid; their premises can be true or false, and thus give you more or less reason to believe the prediction or generalization. But there is no perfect structure to be found here. How to Live with a Narcissist

As stated in Step 2 above, it is not your place to confront this personality or make a determination that this is a narcissistic personality. Now is a good time to seek help for yourself and the other party if this is a possibility. Keep in mind that this personality is based on denial and shame. You may need help avoiding becoming codependent if you aren't there already. If you are in a marriage with the person, you might consider asking them to go to couples counseling so that a neutral party can offer their view of the personality and you can hand some of the pressure over to someone else.

Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs

• Psychological- At the base of the triangle resides psychological factors such as food water, excretion, sex and sleep. The basic functions must be satisfied before individuals will move into higher level functions.
• Safety- Safety encompasses health, employment, bodily safety, resource and morality. It also extends to the safety of family and surroundings.
• Love and Belonging- This level includes family, friendships and sexual intimacy. While the basic act of sex is considered a basic physiological factor, intimacy requires being more stable and safety before the connection can occur.
• Esteem- Includes self-esteem, respecting others and confidence.
