Olympic Ladies Slalom
Although American women (Grethen Fraser and Andrea Mead-Lawrence) won the first two slalom gold medals, the event has been dominated by Europeans. Since 1952, non Europeans have only won two of the 14 slalom golds, and Europeans have won every one since 1976. The slalom has also been marked by the lack of one or two dominant nations; more than a dozen nations have medaled in the ladies slalom, and no country has won more than three gold medals. The only woman ever to win more than a single gold medal was Vreni Schneider, who has two to her credit, from the [[Lillehammer Olympics in 1994 and Calgary Olympics in 1988. Schneider, who was named the Swiss Sportswoman of the Century, also won six World Cup titles in the slalom, as well as another World Championship in the event.

Olympic Speed Skating Women's 1500m
A handful of nations have enjoyed periods of success in the 1,500 meter race. The USSR won three of the first five gold medals in the Olympics, but neither it nor Russia has won since 1976. East Germany and Germany combine for three gold medals as well, the same number that has been won by competitors from the Netherlands. Overall, German women have been the most successful, medaling in every Olympics in the 1,500 meter race from 1980 through 2002, and snaring multiple medals on various occasions.
In recent years, Anni Friesinger has been the dominant 1,500-meter racer. She won World Championship gold in 2001, 2003, 2004, 2008, and 2009, as well as the gold medal in 2002 in Salt Lake City. Cindy Klassen also enjoyed a period at the top of the sport in the middle of the past decade, setting a world record in 2005 and winning the gold in 2006 in Turin.
Earlier in the event's history, a Soviet competitor named Lidiya Skoblikova was the event's queen, winning the first two gold medals in the 1960 and 1964 Olympics. She remains the only skater to successfully defend her gold medal in the Olympics.

"Being at the Olympics stadium, hearing the crowd, knowing that I'm competing for the United States, this is what I've always dreamed about. It's not about winning the gold medal — that's a goal — but the purest part of the dream wasn't about winning the gold medal. It was about that moment."ChristianityToday: Q+A: Bryan Clay (August 14, 2008)
