Hurricane Danielle
Danielle was one of the names chosen when the six rotating lists with male and female names were adopted in 1979. The first use of the name was for Tropical Storm Danielle in 1980. The name was also for hurricanes in 1998 and 2004, and for tropical storms in 1986 and 1992. All hurricane names from 1953 through 1978 were female, but the name Danielle was never used during that period.

Tropical Storm Earl 2010
Tropical Storm Earl formed on August 25, 2010, becoming the fifth named storm of the the 2010 Atlantic hurricane season.http://edition.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/08/25/tropical.storm.frank.forms/?hpt=T2#fbid=34PH8U2kd0J&wom=false Earl was preceded by Hurricane Danielle, which was cutting a path through the Atlantic Ocean at Category 2 hurricane strength on the morning of August 26, 2010.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/08/26/hurricanes.danielle.earl/
On the morning of Thursday, August 26, 2010, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, issued an advisory offering current information on Tropical Storm Earl. The tropical storm was packing sustained winds of 45 miles per hour, making it a relatively weak tropical storm.http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/text/refresh/MIATCPAT2+shtml/260241.shtml Tropical storm winds are between 39 and 74 miles per hour. While the storm's exact path was uncertain, forecasters did indicate that they expect Tropical Storm Earl to gain strength in coming days, possibly becoming a hurricane by Saturday, August 28, 2010.http://www.cnn.com/2010/US/08/26/hurricanes.danielle.earl/

Hurricane Colin
The hurricane season in 2010 is the first season to use the name Colin. The "C" name in 2004 was Charley. Hurricane Charley hit the southwest coast of Florida as a Category 4 hurricane on Aug. 13, 2004. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004charley.shtml?
The hurricane came ashore near Cayo Costa, which is just north of Captiva Island. After making landfall, Hurricane Charley took a north northeastward track, passing over Punta Gorda, Port Charlotte, and Orlando. Although Hurricane Charley weakened as it crossed the Florida peninsula, it still had hurricane-force winds when it moved offshore near Daytona Beach. Charley also struck Cape Romain and North Myrtle Beach, SC, and, weakening to a tropical storm, crossed North Carolina before it moved back into the Atlantic and became extratropical.
Hurricane Charley was a deadly storm that caused massive property damage. Nine people in Florida, one in Rhode Island, four in Cuba, and one in Jamaica were killed as a direct result of Hurricane Charley. The total property damages in Florida, South Carolina, and North Carolina, including insured and uninsured damages, were estimated at $14 billion. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004charley.shtml?
The WMO retired the name Charley after 2004 because of the loss of life and extensive property damages.http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/retirednames.shtml Colin was substituted for Charley in 2010. Incredibly, the names Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne were also retired after the 2004 season.

Hurricane Danielle 2010
Tropical Storm Danielle became the fourth named storm and the second hurricane of the Atlantic hurricane season, which began on June 1, 2010. The season was predicted by some forecasters to be an active one. June 2010 saw the birth of Hurricane Alex, which made landfall about 110 miles south of Brownsville, Texas, with minimal impact.http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/37992214/ At its peak, Hurricane Alex was a category 2 hurricane.http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2010/08/23/tropical-storm-danielle-2_n_691154.html Tropical Storm Bonnie formed in July 2010, coming ashore in South Florida as a minimal tropical storm before weakening into a tropical depression back out in the Gulf of Mexico.http://www.beaumontenterprise.com/news/local/99020179.html
Tropical Storm Colin formed in the Caribbean on August 3, 2010. The storm weakened into a tropical depression as it moved over the Atlantic before strengthening again and causing strong rip currents from North Carolina to New Jersey.http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE6745E220100805 http://www.wral.com/news/state/story/8100735/ Colin eventually dissipated over Bermuda on August 8, 2010.http://www.cnn.com/2010/WORLD/americas/08/08/bermuda.tropical.depression/index.html

New Zealand Earthquake 2010
Earthquakes in New Zealand are not uncommon. Fox News reported that New Zealand actually has more than 14,000 earthquakes annually, though they are typically minor, with "only about 150 felt by residents." The USGS says the last two major earthquakes to hit the country struck in January of 1977 and November of 1995. Both quakes measured a 6.1 on the Richter Scale and neither resulted in casualties.http://www.foxnews.com/scitech/2010/09/03/major-earthquake-hits-new-zealand/?test=latestnews

Hurricane Alex
The first Tropical Storm Alex formed on July 27, 1992, as a tropical wave moving off the coast of Africa.http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/1998alex.html It began as a tropical depression and strengthened to a tropical storm on July 28. Its highest sustained winds were 45 knots on July 31. Its minimum central pressure was 1002 mb, also on July 31. The storm was prevented from strengthening further by wind shear, which decreased its intensity back to a tropical storm. The storm moved west but, before reaching the U.S. coast, it turned to the northwest and dissipated on Aug. 2. http://weather.unisys.com/hurricane/atlantic/1998/index.html No watches or warnings were ever issued. Tropical Storm Alex never was a threat to land and caused no casualties or damages.
The first Hurricane Alex appeared during the 2004 hurricane season. http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/2004alex.shtml? On July 31, the storm became a tropical depression about 175 nautical miles east of Jacksonville, FL. It strengthened to a tropical storm on Aug. 1. The storm moved northeastward toward the coast of the Carolinas and, about 65 nautical miles south-southeast of Cape Fear, it became a hurricane. The storm touched land at the Outer Banks of North Carolina as a Category 1 hurricane; officially Alex did not make landfall in the U.S. because its eye stayed just off the coast. http://www.2004hurricanes.com/alex.html Alex then turned back out over the Atlantic Ocean. Hurricane Earl 2010
Hurricane Earl's projected path was expected to continue to take the storm along the East Coast of the U.S. and very close to southeastern New England on September 3, 2010, as a weak hurricane.http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at2+shtml/152008.shtml?3-daynl?large#contents Forecasters at the National Hurricane Center indicated that Hurricane Earl would likely stay about 100 miles off the coast of New Jersey and Long Island, New York. The storm was expected, however, to come very close to Cape Cod and Nantucket Island, Massachusetts.http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2010/09/03/national/main6832649.shtml?tag=breakingnews Preparations were underway along the East Coast, with the governors of Massachusetts and Rhode Island declaring states of emergency in anticipation of Hurricane Earl's arrival.http://abcnews.go.com/US/hurricane-earl-sideswipes-carolina-coast-northeast-braces-arrival/story?id=11549420
Because of the threat of a major hurricane passing extremely close to the coast, mandatory evacuation orders were issued for visitors on two North Carolina Outer Banks islands - Ocracoke and Hatteras Islands.http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gVWjsPEiqe1tEu2mhBIRaxxGi8owD9HV4G001 In addition, Virginia Governor Bob McDonnell declared a state of emergency "in anticipation that Earl could shift and head for coastal communities as early as Thursday night." Hurricane Paula 2010
The exact path of Hurricane Paula was difficult to predict. Some projections took the storm past Cuba and up to South Florida; other projections indicated that the hurricane could turn once it reached the western tip of Cuba and head south.http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/refresh/graphics_at3+shtml/083414.shtml?5-daynl?large#contents Heavy rains were forecast throughout Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula, along with parts of Belize, Honduras and Cuba.http://www.tampabay.com/news/weather/hurricanes/seasons-ninth-hurricane-paula-threatens-mexicos-yucatan-peninsula/1127574 http://www.google.com/hostednews/ap/article/ALeqM5gVWjsPEiqe1tEu2mhBIRaxxGi8owD9IQABNG1?docId=D9IQABNG1
