Joshua Tree National Park
Some of the native peoples that have inhabited the area have been the Pinto Culture, the Serrano, the Chemehuevi and the Cahuilla. Later in the 1800’s, cattlemen would use the area for grazing. Miners dug through the earth for gold. In the 1900’s, families were moving in and building their homes. Each of these peoples have added to the cultural history of Joshua Tree National Park. The park now contains 501 archeological sites, 88 historic structures, 19 cultural landscapes and a museum collection. The park was first a national monument in 1936. It then became Joshua Tree National park in 1994. http://www.nps.gov/jotr/historyculture/index.htm

Acadia National Park Camping
Acadia history can be dated back to the Native American Indians, as signs of their settlements have been seen throughout the region. However the first written piece of history is presumed to be from the early 1600's when in 1604 Samuel Champlain led an expedition that landed on Mount Desert Island. The french explorer recorded his encounters and described the stone landscape in his journals. He named the area “Isles des monts Desert” for its appearance. To avoid the conflicts in the colonies, families fled north during the Revolutionary War, settling in the coastal region of Maine. It was not until George B. Dorr, a spokesman for the conservation effort began slowly purchasing the land we know today as Acadia National Park. In 1919, President Wilson signed an act declaring the coastal land in Maine as Lafayette National park. In 1929, the name was officially changed to Acadia. http://www.nps.gov/acad/historyculture/stories.htm

Arches National Park
In ancient times, this Puebloan and Fremont people roamed the area. As those people were leaving, the Shoshone people came to the area and were still here in 1776 when the first Europeans entered the area. A petroglyph panel near Wolfe Ranch has images believed to be from the Ute Shoshone people on it. The first Europeans were from Spain. But it was a French-American trapper named Denis Julien that first left his inscription here on June 9, 1844. An interesting note is that Julien often chiseled his name on his travels through the southwest. The first settlement was the Mormon’s Elk Mountain Mission in what is now Moab in 1855. Moab was permanently settled by the 1890’s by ranchers, prospectors and farmers.http://www.nps.gov/arch/historyculture/index.htm
