Maybelline
The company was founded as a family business in 1915. It was named after the founder's sister, Maybel, who invented mascara. At first, Maybelline Cake Mascara was sold by mail. By 1917 customers had started to ask for it in drugstores. In the 1930s the company expanded into eyebrow pencils and eye shadow. In the 1960s Maybelline's new waterproof Ultra Lash Mascara revolutionized the cosmetics industry. The company expanded into foundation, lipstick and nail polish in the 1970s. In 1971 the company invented the first water based mascara, Maybelline Great Lash. In 1983 the company invented Shine Free Oil Control makeup for women with oily skin. In 1991 the company adopted its current slogan about good looks being based on Maybelline rather than being born with the woman.
