Picture Books

English illustrator Randolph Caldecott is given credit for the invention of the picture book. The books were smaller in size and contained more pictures and art than they did actual words. Color pictures also were introduced by Caldecott. The image of galloping John Gilpin began the illustrating of many children's books for Caldecott.http://www.rif.org/art/timeline.mspx The first book with a more modern format was Beatrix Potter's The Tale of Peter Rabbit, originally published in 1902.http://www.rif.org/art/timeline.mspx

In 1942, Simon & Schuster began publishing a series of well-illustrated and high quality children's books known as the Little Golden Books.http://www.rif.org/art/timeline.mspx
