Robert Rejda

  • ChicagoTribune.com: "Man who wanted to be executed commits suicide" (December 14, 2007)
    • Though Rejda was on psychotropic medication, he was not considered a suicide risk. Said Public Defender Robert Miller: "I visited six times in the last two weeks, because he had brought up the issue of pleading guilty and accepting the death penalty. I had no indication, none whatsoever, no suggestion that he was thinking of taking his own life."
  • DailyHerald.com: "Man accused of Christmas murder in DuPage Co. wants death penalty" (December 12, 2007)
    • Miller, Rejda's attorney, had asked that his client receive a mental-health evaluation before entering a guilty plea.
  • Pioneer Press: Judge denies additional rape evidence (November 30, 2007)
  • ABC7Chicago.com: Bond denied for suspect in Christmas murder (March 23, 2007)
    • Prosecutors alleged that Rejda sexually assaulted Kiefer and beat her with an aluminum bat when she walked in on him robbing her family's home. The fact that they went to school together as children was considered coincidental.

Christopher Pittman

Christopher Pittman was convicted in 2005 of taking a pump-action shotgun and murdering his grandparents, Joe Frank Pittman and Joy Roberts Pittman, as they slept. Afterwards, Pittman, then 12 years old, set the house on fire and attempted to flee in his grandparents' SUV with the family golden retriever.

Pittman's defense centered around the prescription anti-depressant Paxil which he was taking at the time of the 2001 murders. Just days before the crime, Pittman's prescription was switched to Zoloft. His lawyers claimed that the change in medications created a chemical reaction within Pittman that caused him to become violent.

In April 2008, the U.S. Supreme Court refused, without comment, to hear Pittman's appeal, which centered around whether the drugs played a role in the murders, whether Pittman's sentence was excessive, and whether the boy should have ever been tried as an adult in the first place.

Pittman is imprisoned in an adult correctional facility in South Carolina. He turned 18 in 2008, and is not set to be released until he is in his mid-40s.

John White Sentenced

John White, a 54 year old black man was sentenced to two to four years for shooting a 17 year old, Daniel Cicciaro Jr, in his driveway with an illegal handgun in August of 2006. Whites' teenage son Aaron had been feuding with Cicciaro. White was convicted in December of 2007, and many expected he would receive up to 15 years in prison for the conviction of manslaughter. During the trial, White explained that when he was younger he heard stories of about the Ku Klux Klan burning his grandfathers business down in the 1929's and he feared a similar attack. White was sentenced on May 19, 2008. The lenient sentence came as a shock to the family of Cicciaro. In an emotional response following the sentencing, Cicciaro Sr. made the comment ""Well, let's see what happens when Aaron White gets shot and see how the laws are". Whites' defense attorney believed the comment to be a threat and the matter was referred to the authorities. The White family was assigned protection for their home. John White is seeking an appeal for the conviction.
