- Red Sea -- Its waters were parted for Moses and the Israelites as they fled from the Egyptian army. A body of water with this name does exist in modern times and may be what is referred to in Exodus. Some Biblical scholars believe the Exodus reference was actually to the Sea of Reeds, a lake to the southeast of Egypt which has since dried up.http://bibleatlas.org/red_sea.htm
- Manna -- A flaky sweet substance God provided to sustain the Israelites while wandering in the desert. It fell from the sky during the night and the women would gather it and make cakes from it the next morning. God also sent quail for them to eat and caused ...

What Time Does Hanukkah Begin?
In 168 B.C., the soldiers of Antiochus IV Epiphanes, the Syrian king, descended upon Jerusalem, massacring its people and erecting an altar to the Greek gods.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah A large-scale rebellion led by the Jewish priest Mattathias and his sons broke out against Anthiochus' monarchy.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah One of these sons, Judah Maccabbee, succeeded in driving the Syrians out of Jerusalem and reclaiming the Second Temple for Judaism.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah To celebrate the rededication of their temple, the Jews lit the altar's menorah -- but they only had enough oil to last one night.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah Miraculously, the oil lasted for eight nights, enough time for more to be made.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah As a result, Hanukkah is an eight-day celebration, which begins with the lighting of the first candle of the menorah at sundown on the 25th of Kislev.http://www.history.com/topics/hanukkah

Lauren Winner
"There are a few people out there with whom you fit just so, and, amazingly, you keep fitting just so even after you have growth spurts or lose weight or stop wearing high heels. You keep fitting after you have children or change religions or stop dyeing your hair or quit your job at Goldman Sachs and take up farming. Somehow, God is gracious enough to give us a few of those people, people you can stretch into, people who don't go away, and whom you wouldn't want to go away, even if they offered."—Lauren F. How to Plan for Passover
Passover is a time for families to be together to remember their Jewish ancestry. However, the seder can be long and confusing for children. It is important to incorporate activities that make them feel included in the ritualistic meal. Some ways to include children are:
‘’’The Four Questions’’’ It is traditional for the youngest person attending the seder to recite the four questions during the seder. They can be stated in English, but older children can try reading or saying them in Hebrew as well. To prevent public speaking nerves, work with your child in advance to become familiar with the four questions. In English, the question is repeated four times with four different answers.
The question is: What makes this night different from all [other] nights? The answers are:
- On all nights we need not dip even once, on this night we do so twice!
- On all nights we eat chametz or matzah, and on this night only matzah.
- On all nights we eat any kind of vegetables, and on this night maror!
- On all nights we eat sitting upright or reclining, and on this night we all recline!
This is the transliteration of the questions in Hebrew:
The Question is: Mah nishtanah halyla hazeh mikol halaylot
- She'bechol halaylot ain anu matbilin afilu pa'am echat, halyla hazeh shtei pe'amim?
- She'bechol halaylot anu ochlim chametz o matza, halyla hazeh kulo maztah?
- She'bechol halaylot anu ochlim she'ar yerakot, halyla hazeh maror?
- She'bechol halaylot anu ...
