Iran Election Results

Although the major opposition candidate, Mir Hossein Mousavi, was expected to draw enough support to trigger a run-off election, the Interior Ministry was reporting a landslide in favor of the incumbent after polls closed. According to an official, with 10 million ballots counted, Ahmadinejad had a commanding 68.8 percent of the vote, compared to 28.8 percent for Mousavi. Mousavi, however, alleged that there had been voting irregularities, and declared victory based on "all indications from all over Iran."Al Bawaba: Iran election results: New agency claims Ahmadinejad re-elected Telegraph: Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and Hossein Mousavi both claim victory Ahmadinejad was declared the clear winner by the Iranian electoral commission on June 13, 2009.http://www.allheadlinenews.com/articles/7015481746

Neda Soltani

On June 13, 2009, Iran's electoral commission announced that current president Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had been re-elected. Believing that this result was fraudulent, supporters of Ahmadinejad's opponent, Mir Hossein Mousavi, took to the streets of Tehran in protest.

On June 15, Mousavi himself made an appearance at one of these protests, before a crowd of more than 100,000 people, causing Iran's Guardian Council to begin a ballot recount. The following week, violence began to break out protesters and Iranian authorities.

Soltani was shot during a June 20 protest by a Basij soldier using a sniper rifle. These soldiers are members of a paramilitary force who report to Ayatollah Khamenei, Iran's Supreme Ruler.
