Health Supplements
- Investigate thoroughly the herbs you are taking regarding active ingredients, relevant clinical trials, and dosage recommendations. How long can you take this herb before you need to take a break?
- On the supplement container, there should either be a label or seal saying "USP Dietary Supplement Verified," or certifications from Consumerlab.com, Good Housekeeping, or NSF.
- Purchase products that contain a single herb of a known dose. Mixtures often do not have proportions of all the components.
- Be cautions of outrageous claims. Check the internet for reviews from trusted sources, such as the University of Maryland Medical Center site.
- Supplements from Europe and the United States are more likely to be standardized. Be cautious about herbs from other countries because toxic ingredients are sometimes present.
- Be alert for possible side effects and either reduce the dosage or stop taking the supplement completely.
- Do research on the manufacturer from whom you are purchasing the supplement. Do they do product research? Are their products standardized based on known active ingredients? http://www.healthsystem.virginia.edu/uvahealth/adult_cam/herbal.cfm

How To Design An Herb Garden
LAYOUT: Now that you know what kinds of herbs you want to grow and where you want to grow them you can start making your blue print. A blue print is basically a layout of your garden that tells you exactly which herb will be planted and it's location in the garden. Which ever garden layout you choose, you want to make sure to plant the taller growing herbs in the back and the smaller herbs in the front. You don't want the tall herbs to block the sun to the smaller herbs. Make sure to also include underground and overhead utilities, trees, walkways and such on the layout.
INFORMAL & FORMAL HERB GARDENS: A formal herb garden is a garden that is shaped in a geometrical way. Some have a circular design, and some are square in design. The herbs are strategically placed to form a certain pattern. Sometimes garden sculptures or fountains are used in these gardens. These types of herb gardens usually have walkways in them made out of wood or brick and are quite ornamental. The informal herb garden on the other hand can also include a mixture of herbs, fruits and vegetables. This garden doesn't have a certain pattern to it and one can be more flexible with what is planted. http://www.superbherbs.net/design4.htm http://www.herbsociety.org/beginherb/begplans.php

How to Make Thyme-Infused Olive Oil
- Wash and dry the thyme sprigs. Place them on the work surface.
- Use your fingers to roughen up the thyme sprigs. Press down on the thyme to allow it to break apart slightly.
- Place the thyme sprigs in the bottle. Insert the funnel into the bottle.
- Pour the warm olive oil into the bottle over the thyme sprigs. Insert the topper or lid.
- Allow the thyme-infused olive oil to sit in a cool, dark place for about a week. This allows time for the olive oil to absorb the thyme flavoring.
- Strain the mixture of olive oil and thyme to remove the thyme sprigs and any particles. Return the olive oil to the bottle. Replace the cap. Discard the thyme sprigs. Store until ready to use.http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HUwuM0Iz3Po

How to Grow Cilantro
Once you have chosen and prepared an appropriate spot to plant your cilantro, doing so is relatively easy. Here's how to plant cilantro:
- Simply create some shallow rows (about 1/2" deep) and about 2-4" apart http://www.westcoastseeds.com/how-to-grow/Herb-Seeds/Cilantro
- Place the seeds in the rows, cover them loosely with soil, and water immediatelyhttp://www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-cilantro.html
- The seeds should germinate in 1-2 weeks. Once the seedlings have sprouted, you may have to thin out your crop a bit, since you want a minimum of two inches square around each plant. Simply pull up the extra plants by handhttp://www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-cilantro.html
As mentioned, cilantro can easily bolt, or go to seed, very quickly. If you want to continue harvesting these tasty leaves, there are several things you can do to help prevent premature bolting.
- Harvest the leaves regularly, particularly those near the base of the plant, but never take all the leaves off the stalkhttp://www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-cilantro.html
- As soon as you see evidence of flowering, cut off the flower stalk immediatelyhttp://www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-cilantro.html
- When the plant begins to flower, harvest the entire plant. You should use the cilantro leaves immediately, or, at most, within a few days of harvestinghttp://www.tropicalpermaculture.com/growing-cilantro.html
However, if your cilantro plant does go to seed, all is not lost. Once a plant has bolted, you have two options. You can either:
- Simply ...

How To Grow Lobelia (Riviera Mixed)
Lobelia are fairly easy to grow and do not require too much maintenance which makes them great for beginner gardeners, or those that don't have a lot of time to take care of flowers. Below is a list that, if followed, will keep your Lobelia happy, healthy, and blooming all season long.
Lobelia require at least 12 hours of daylight for optimum flower growth. Be sure to plant them in an area that gets the most sunlight. http://www.panamseed.com/Media/Culture/PAS/LobeliaRivieraRegatta.pdf
Lobelia likes a lot of water. Because of this, be sure to keep the soil around the plant nice and moist.http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/flower/lobelia.htm
To get the most out of your Lobelia plants, fertilize with a normal liquid flower fertilizer about once a month.http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/flower/lobelia.htm
It is not necessary to deadhead Lobelia, but it can be done to keep up the appearance. http://www.gardeningknowhow.com/flower/lobelia.htm
Lobelia do not have any specific diseases, but leaf spots and Gray Mold can sometimes occur. Leaf spots can be picked off if they appear, and gray mold can be taken care of with a general flower fungicide. http://web1.msue.msu.edu/imp/modzz/00000887.html
Lobelia also normally does not have a problem with pests or insects. A general pesticide can be used to rid your Lobelia of any insect or pest problems, if they happen to show uphttp://www.gardenersnet ...
