The band received several awards and nominations in their debut year in 1992, including nominations for Favorite New Heavy Metal/Hard Rock Artist from the American Music Awards, Best Alternative Music Performance for Nevermind from the Grammy Awards, and Video of the Year and Viewer's Choice for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" from the MTV Video Music Awards. They received the Best Alternative Video award for "Smells Like Teen Spirit" and Best New Artist from the MTV Video Music Awards in the same year. The song "Smells Like Teen Spirit" was also nominated for Best Rock Song at the 1993 Grammy Awards, but it lost to "Layla" by Eric Clapton. Pearl Jam dressed up as Devo to perform a cover of the Devo's hit "Whip It" on Halloween, October 31, 2009. Pearl Jam played "Whip It" as the first song of their final encore set of their 40-song concert, the last of four consecutive nights at Philadelphia's Wachovia Spectrum.

Eddie Vedder Lawsuit
Pearl Jam lead singer Eddie Vedder faces a copyright infringement lawsuit filed in a Manhattan federal court. The suit by by Gordon Peterson (also known as Indio) claims that Vedder infringed Peterson's copyright by altering the lyrics to the song "Hard Sun," written by Peterson and recorded by Vedder for the soundtrack to the 2007 film Into the Wild.http://www.nypost.com/p/news/national/vedder_in_big_jam_on_lyrics_CbJkutLO0OUXyWRxgVhzVO
Peterson also charges Universal Music with licensing the song without his approval. A lawyer for Vedder, Gregory Clarick dismissed the validity of the suit. "We don't see any basis for a copyright infringement claim," he said. The lawsuit claims, "Vedder altered certain key lyrics of Hard Sun ... eroding the integrity of the composition." Peterson demands all profits from the "acts of infringement." The song originally appeared on Peterson's 1989 album Big Harvest and became a minor radio hit. Peter Steele Dead
Peter Steele, born Peter T. Ratajczyk, in Brooklyn, New York on January 4, 1962, was best known as the lead singer and bassist for the goth-metal band Type O-Negative. Steele was the founder of the band, which officially took on the name in 1990. Prior to that, Steele had formed the nucleus for the band that would eventually become Type O-Negative in 1981 while still a teenager along with other future band members John Campos and Josh Silver.

In 1995, Steele posed nude as the centerfold for the August 1995 edition of PlayGirl magazine. Steele reportedly agreed to the pictorial as a publicity stunt.
In 2005, in yet another self-admitted publicity stunt, Steele authorized that he be reported as dead on the band's official website. This was done as a publicity stunt following the band's signing with a new record label, SPX Records.
