Temple of Artemis

The Temple of Artemis at Brauron is located in the town of Vravronacan which is found between Loutsa and Porto Rafti in East Attica. Loutsa is reachable by bus from Athens and then it is a short walk to the temple. Visitors will also find a museum there that is open Tuesday to Sunday 8:30-3PM. http://www.athensguide.com/rafina.html http://www.greeceathensaegeaninfo.com/h-athens/day-trips/braurona-artemis-bears.htm

The site was especially important to women, for the Goddess Artemis is the protector of childbirth. Those unfortunate women who died in childbirth had their clothes dedicated to Iphigeneia, the maiden who worshipped Artemis and brought her statue to Brauron. A cave that houses the tomb of Iphigeneia is also located at the Temple. http://www.stoa.org/athens/sites/brauron.html

Every four years Athenians celebrated with a festival called the Brauronia. The festival includes a procession from Athens to the sanctuary at Brauron. http://www.stoa.org/athens/sites/brauron.html

A prehistoric, tiny Byzantine chapel with ancient icons painted on the walls was recently found during an excavation there. In the peaceful setting of the Temple of Artemis visitors will be provided with close look of the past. If traveling in Athens take a day trip out the Temple of Artemis and step back in time where the wild, ancient once world thrived and ...

Lycabettus Hill

Geologically the Lycabettus Hill is composed of limestone and is centrally located in the heart of Athens.http://www.yenbaet.com/Galleries/Athens/8719706_sedSu/1/560928885_Lk7W8/Medium One will find upon ascent of the hill the Lycabettus Theatre, a 5th century small chapel dedicated to St. George (Agios Georgios) and a resturant. http://athensgreece.ca/lycabettus/restaurant.html http://www.athensguide.org/lycabettus.html

Between the main summit of Lycabettus Hill and it’s eastern side the open air theater built in 1965 hosts concerts and performances regularly as part of the Hellenic Summer Festivals that runs during Athen’s summer months. http://www.athensinfoguide.com/nlfestivals.htm

If you are energetic and want to pump your blood, hike to the summit of Lycabettus Hill. Another alternative for those who are less inclined to huff and puff is to take the funicular train on Aristippou Street which takes approximately half an hour to reach the top. Aristippou Street Station departs from the Kolonaki neighbourhood which is located between Syndagma Square and Lycabettus Hill. This modern neighborhood is located in central Athens and offers an array of luxurious shops, cafes and bars. http://www.greeka.com/attica/athens/athens-neighbourhoods/athens-kolonaki.htm
