George Ryan Conviction Upheld
Ryan's lawyer Jim Thompson has said that he will request a commutation of Ryan's sentence from President George W. Bush. Thompson believes that the loss of title, pension and time served is sufficient punishment for a man who would be almost 80-years-old by the time he'd served his full sentence. Meanwhile, Ryan's former prosecutors maintain that easing the disgraced governors punishment will send the wrong message to the victims of government corruption.Chicago Sun-Times: Ryan's hope (May 28, 2008)

Arnold Schwarzenegger
Always a staunch supporter of the Republican Party, Schwarzenegger put his celebrity status to a new use in 2003. California governor Gray Davis had been recalled and both parties sought a candidate to replace him. Schwarzenegger threw his hat into the ring. The combination of his celebrity and voters' disenchantment with the Democratic Party led to his election. He was re-elected in 2006 with 56% of the vote.
